The client wishes to embody clear Chinese identities in these courtyard buildings, which composed of management offices, corporate clubs and entrepreneur’s residential space.
The scheme follows the Chinese garden house models, which balance the space for courtyards and gardens. The east (working) zone is relatively dense and ‘dry’ patio-centered office ‘courtyard’, ‘sliced’ from a traditional neighborhood in longitude direction. The west (living and retreating) zone is configured to be relatively soft and irregular to symbolize a ‘garden’ . A Zen garden sits in between two zones. Within the east wings, the main circulation is arranged along the longitude direction rather than normal latitude aspects, due to the particulars of the site, which also lend the scheme an unique opportunity to explore new ways of spatial story-telling.
Some curved wooden window/door frames from demolished old buildings are expected to be reused in the inner façade of the courtyard building, while the outwards facing window/doors are all to be of simple clean shaped. Some gable walls are braced together to enhance the feel of patio, and the fenestrations on these walls are organized in such a way that viewing from these holes can always be led to a framed scenic object, either an elaborated tree or curved stone. Some of the rainwater roof runoffs are drained away by ‘shooting’ into the adjacent fish ponds instead of by downpipes.
